The main uncertainties concern timing, population structure, and routes south of the continental ice sheets.
Plain-language explanation
Ice sheets stored enough water to lower sea level and expose the shallow seafloor between Siberia and Alaska. People could live within this larger region as environments shifted. Their descendants later moved into the Americas, but archaeology and genetics do not yet show one exact itinerary.
Historical and scholarly context
The current conventional view is that the earliest peoples of the Americas were ultimately connected to northeast Asia and Beringia. Ancient DNA strongly supports that broad ancestry connection. However, the route and timing are not fully settled.
The older schoolbook version described people crossing the Bering Land Bridge after the ice sheets opened an inland corridor. That version is too simple. The inland ice-free corridor may not have been biologically viable early enough for the oldest evidence south of the ice sheets. This is why Coastal Migration Theory has become important.
The Beringian Standstill hypothesis proposes that ancestral Native American populations may have been isolated in or near Beringia for a period before expanding south. Ancient DNA has made this more plausible, though the exact location, duration, and archaeological signature remain debated.
Beringia should be treated as a source region and population-stage model, not merely a walking path.

The strongest support for Beringia comes from combining multiple evidence streams. Geology shows exposed land during glacial low sea levels. Fossils and ecology show plant and animal exchange between Asia and North America. Ancient DNA supports ancestral links between Native American populations and northeast Asian or Beringian source populations. Archaeology shows humans in Alaska and the Americas by the late Pleistocene, though not every step is preserved.
The model is strongest when stated broadly: Beringia was central to the peopling of the Americas. It becomes weaker when stated as a rigid story: one people crossed one bridge once, then walked through one corridor directly into the continents.
