Mohenjo-Daro

Mohenjo-Daro is one of the most famous cities of the Indus Valley Civilization. It is located in Sindh, Pakistan, near the Indus River. It was a major Mature Harappan urban center, famous for its planned streets, brick architecture, wells, drains, bathing areas, citadel mound, lower town, and the Great Bath. UNESCO lists the archaeological ruins as a World Heritage site. The site is also one of the most abused ancient-history topics online. It is repeatedly claimed that Mohenjo-Daro was destroyed by a nuclear blast, that its skeletons are radioactive, that buildings were vitrified, or that the city preserves evidence of ancient weapons from Indian epics. These claims are not supported by the excavation record.

Why Ancient Inquiry uses this source

Modern archaeological synthesis placing Mohenjo-Daro within broader Harappan urbanism and regional transformation rather than a single instantaneous destruction event.

Research detail

Overview

Plain-language explanation

Mohenjo-Daro was a real city, not a myth. Its ruins show planned streets, brick structures, wells, drains, and public spaces. It was one of the great urban centers of the Indus Civilization. But the city does not provide evidence for a nuclear attack. The nuclear claim usually has four parts: skeletons were found lying in the streets, the skeletons were radioactive, buildings or sand were turned to glass, and ancient Indian texts describe weapons matching nuclear bombs. Each part has problems. The skeletons were not a single citywide death scene. The published archaeological context does not support a final massacre. The radiation claims are not supported by credible site reports. The vitrification claim is not established for the city. Later epic weapon descriptions cannot be used as direct archaeological evidence for a blast at Mohenjo-Daro.

Limits and disputed claims

Uncertainty and alternative claims are separated in the canonical record.

Claim status

  • Unsupported: The listed archaeological and heritage records provide no destruction-layer or radiological support for an ancient nuclear explosion at Mohenjo-Daro.
  • Unsupported: The CM-133 catalog contains no controlled radiological analysis, diagnostic blast evidence, or verified vitrification study supporting nuclear destruction at Mohenjo-Daro.
  • Internet lore: AT-0826 documents scattered skeletal contexts, not a radiological finding, and the catalog contains no scientific source confirming claims of radioactive skeletons at Mohenjo-Daro.
  • Unsupported: Dales's reassessment of roughly 37 Indus-period skeletons or partial skeletons does not support a single contemporary final massacre at Mohenjo-Daro.
  • Active debate: Mohenjo-Daro preserves major public water architecture, but the listed record does not establish the Great Bath's exact ritual or ceremonial function.
  • Active debate: Regional environmental and archaeological sources support a multicausal Harappan transformation, but they do not establish one precise local abandonment sequence for Mohenjo-Daro.
