Precession of the Equinoxes

Precession of the equinoxes is the slow shift of the equinox points against the background stars caused by the gradual wobble of Earth's rotational axis. Overview

Precession of the equinoxes is the slow shift of the equinox points against the background stars caused by the gradual wobble of Earth's rotational axis. In modern astronomy, the cycle is roughly 25,700 to 26,000 years. This means the equinox Sun slowly appears against different star backgrounds over long periods, and pole stars change over millennia. The earliest widely credited discovery in the Greek tradition is Hipparchus in the second century BCE, known mainly through later discussion in Ptolemy's Almagest. This does not mean Earth flips over. It means the orientation of the axis changes slowly, like a spinning top. The pole star changes, and the equinox points shift relative to the background stars.
