Earth continually erodes, buries, alters, and recycles its surface, so buildings and machines from very deep time might not survive intact. A planet-changing industry could nevertheless leave indirect signals in sediments, chemistry, isotopes, minerals, ecology, or unusually persistent manufactured substances. Scientists can define and search for those signals, but no accepted combination currently identifies an earlier technological civilization.

Mainstream evidence currently supports humans as the only known species on Earth with confirmed industrial civilization.
