Overview
The Burckle Crater Claim was promoted by members of the Holocene Impact Working Group in the 2000s. The proposed crater is described as an undersea feature roughly 29 kilometers across in the southwest Indian Ocean. Proponents argued that large coastal chevron dunes in places such as Madagascar and Australia could point back toward an ocean impact that generated an enormous tsunami. The claim is not accepted as a confirmed impact crater. The evidence is indirect: bathymetric shape, proposed tsunami-direction logic, coastal chevrons, and claimed unusual particles or deposits. Strong confirmation of an impact crater normally requires diagnostic evidence such as shocked minerals, shatter cones, impact melt, geochemical anomaly, breccia, drilling cores, or a clear geophysical structure. Those standards have not been met publicly for Burckle.
Plain-language explanation
The Burckle argument works as a chain. First, proponents identify large V-shaped or crescent-like coastal landforms called chevrons. Second, they argue those chevrons were made by a giant tsunami. Third, they project directions from multiple chevrons back into the Indian Ocean. Fourth, they point to a seafloor feature as the possible impact site. The weak point is that each link in the chain has to be true. If the chevrons are wind-shaped dunes rather than tsunami deposits, the directional triangulation fails. If the seafloor feature is volcanic, tectonic, erosional, or otherwise non-impact in origin, the crater claim fails. If there is no diagnostic shocked mineral or impact melt evidence, the claim remains unconfirmed.
Historical and scholarly context
Confirmed impact craters require more than circular or crater-like shape. The Earth has many circular and semi-circular structures formed by volcanism, tectonics, salt movement, erosion, collapse, and other processes. In the ocean, the problem is even harder because features are underwater and often poorly sampled.
Impact confirmation usually depends on diagnostic evidence. This can include shocked quartz or other shocked minerals, shatter cones, high-pressure mineral phases, impact melt, breccias, geochemical signatures, gravity or magnetic anomalies consistent with impact structure, and drilling cores showing impact-related deformation. A proposed crater without diagnostic evidence should be treated cautiously.
The chevron argument is also disputed. Large coastal chevrons can look dramatic, but shape alone does not prove tsunami origin. Wind-shaped dunes can create similar forms. Marine shells or microfossils in dunes do not automatically prove megatsunami deposition because coastal and wind processes can move marine material inland in several ways.

The strongest support for keeping Burckle on the map is not that it is confirmed. It is that the claim became influential enough to shape discussions about Holocene impacts, ocean impacts, megatsunamis, and flood-myth speculation. The physical possibility of ocean impacts is real, and undersea impact structures can be difficult to study. That makes the claim worth tracking.
The strongest support for the specific Burckle claim remains much weaker: a proposed seafloor structure, argued directional links from coastal chevrons, and disputed claims of impact-related materials. This is not enough for strong crater status.
