Overview
Electric Universe
Electric Universe is not the same as plasma physics. Plasma physics is a real and important field used in solar physics, magnetospheres, auroras, astrophysical jets, accretion disks, and space weather. Electric Universe takes that real plasma language and expands it into a broad alternative cosmology that rejects or radically reinterprets the Big Bang, dark matter, black holes, standard stellar fusion, impact cratering, comet science, and sometimes ancient mythology. The claim network is important because it connects Saturn Myth, Velikovsky-style catastrophism, Thunderbolts media, ancient thunderbolt symbolism, solar outburst ideas, comet claims, and internet alternative-science communities. The evidence rating is mixed by subclaim: real plasma physics is strong science; Electric Universe as a replacement for modern cosmology is weak and mostly unsupported.

Overview
Plain-language explanation
Electric Universe usually argues that large-scale electric currents and plasma discharges explain many things that mainstream science explains with gravity, fusion, orbital mechanics, impacts, and general relativity. In some versions, stars are externally powered by galactic electric currents. Comets are not icy bodies releasing gas and dust, but electrically active rocks. Craters and canyons may be electrical scars rather than impact or erosion features. The Big Bang is rejected or replaced by plasma-universe models. The reason it appeals to people is clear. Space is full of plasma. Auroras, lightning, solar flares, magnetospheres, and cosmic jets look electrical. Mainstream science does use plasma and electromagnetism constantly. The mistake is turning that into a universal replacement theory without matching the full evidence.
Historical and scholarly context
Mainstream astrophysics already includes plasma and electromagnetism. The solar wind, coronal mass ejections, planetary magnetospheres, auroras, accretion disks, jets, synchrotron radiation, magnetic reconnection, and charged particles are not ignored.
The disagreement is about scale and replacement. Gravity dominates large-scale structure because matter is usually close to electrically neutral over large distances, while gravity is always attractive and cumulative. Electromagnetic forces dominate in many local plasma environments, but that does not mean galaxies, stars, and cosmology are primarily powered by hidden electric circuits.
Standard cosmology is not based on one observation. It uses many linked lines of evidence: cosmic expansion, the cosmic microwave background, light-element abundances, large-scale structure, gravitational lensing, supernova observations, baryon acoustic oscillations, and CMB anisotropy measurements from WMAP and Planck. The model has open problems, especially dark matter and dark energy, but open problems do not automatically validate Electric Universe.
What the evidence supports
The strongest support is that plasma and electromagnetic effects really do matter in space. Auroras, solar wind, magnetospheres, coronal mass ejections, jets, and synchrotron radiation are real.
The story support is also strong as a media network. Electric Universe has influenced how many people connect ancient myths, Saturn, thunderbolts, comets, and cosmic catastrophe. That makes it important for the website even if its scientific claims are weak.
Limits and disputed claims
- Straw-man problem: Claiming mainstream science ignores electricity is false.
- Replacement problem: Real plasma physics does not replace gravity, nuclear fusion, general relativity, or impact geology.
- Prediction problem: Many Electric Universe claims are flexible after the fact, making them hard to test.
- Citation problem: Alfvén's legitimate work is often used as authority for claims he did not prove.
- Scale problem: Local plasma behavior does not automatically scale to galaxy-wide circuits or cosmology.
Claim status
- Unsupported: The Thunderbolts guide documents an Electric Universe replacement framework; the listed plasma, Planck, solar, and comet sources do not validate it as the primary explanation for stars, cosmology, and comets.
- Well supported: Plasma physics is mainstream science.
- Unsupported: Electric Universe replacement cosmology is not supported by the Planck cosmological-parameter evidence cited here.
- Well supported: NASA's solar baseline identifies nuclear fusion as the Sun's energy source; the catalog supplies no comparable evidence for an externally powered Electric Sun.
- Misrepresented source: The Thunderbolts Project's own guide documents Electric Universe as a broad advocacy framework; it does not establish the framework's scientific validity or measure its reach.
