Plain-language explanation
Buildings, machines, and bodies are unlikely to survive recognizably for millions of years. If an earlier industrial society had existed, its best chance of detection might be a globally correlated package of chemical and sedimentary anomalies rather than ruins. No such package has been confirmed.
Historical and scholarly context
Geological preservation is selective
The geological record is not a complete archive. Some environments preserve evidence well, while others destroy it. Cities, roads, machines, and bones are especially vulnerable over millions of years. Oceanic crust is recycled. Land surfaces erode. Sediments are buried, heated, deformed, or chemically altered. Even for recent human history, preservation is uneven.
This is why the Silurian Hypothesis focuses less on ruins and more on chemical signatures. A deep-time industrial civilization might leave a signal such as a rapid carbon isotope excursion, unusual nitrogen cycle change, metals, synthetic molecules, plastic residues, or unnatural radionuclide patterns. But a natural event can also create abrupt carbon-cycle or climate signals, so any claim would need a combination of markers.
The hypothesis is about detectability, not evidence
A key distinction matters: the paper asks what evidence would be needed. It does not present evidence that such a civilization existed. It also warns that unexplained geological events should not be treated as proof of prior industry simply because they are unusual.
Anthropocene status
The Anthropocene is useful as a comparison even though it is not formally accepted as a geological epoch. In 2024, the International Union of Geological Sciences rejected the formal proposal to define the Anthropocene as a new epoch. That does not erase human planetary impact. It only means the term remains informal in formal stratigraphy.
What the evidence supports
The strongest support is scientific plausibility of the question. Earth is old, the geological record is incomplete, and direct evidence can disappear. The Anthropocene shows that industrial civilization can leave planetary-scale signals. It is reasonable to ask what those signals might look like in deep time.
The hypothesis is strongest when treated as a filter: if someone claims a prior industrial civilization existed, what evidence should they produce? The answer is not just odd stones, legends, or missing ruins. It would require a multi-marker geological signature that is hard to explain naturally.
