Sphinx Water Erosion Theory

The Great Sphinx is usually placed within the Fourth Dynasty Giza complex, commonly connected with Khafre and the quarry, causeway, valley temple, and mortuary landscape around his pyramid. The water erosion theory argues that the rounded, vertical weathering on the Sphinx enclosure walls is best explained by long exposure to heavy rainfall, which would push the monument's origin back thousands of years before dynastic Egypt. The theory matters because it is one of the most influential modern attempts to redate a famous Egyptian monument. Its strongest point is that the weathering pattern on the Sphinx enclosure is real and deserves geological explanation.
