The engineering case should be made from archaeological evidence rather than from a checklist of absent modern technologies. That does not make the monument non-human. The evidence supports large-scale Neolithic cooperation, ritual planning, stone transport, and symbolic landscape design. Recent stone-source research has made Stonehenge even more interesting: many sarsens likely came from West Woods in Wiltshire, bluestones from west Wales, and a 2024 Nature study argues that the Altar Stone likely came from northeast Scotland.

World ages are stories or systems that divide history into phases. Some describe decline from a golden age to a corrupt age. Some describe repeated creations and destructions. Some connect ages to gods, metals, stars, suns, calendars, or moral cycles. Famous examples include Hesiod's Greek Ages of Man, Ovid's four ages, Hindu Yuga cycles, Mesoamerican world creations, and later esoteric or astrological age systems. World-age traditions are real as myth, literature, religion, and cultural memory. They do not automatically preserve exact scientific timelines. Some age systems are connected to astronomy or calendars, while others are moral, theological, political, or symbolic.

Ancient calendars were not one thing. Some were lunar, some solar, some lunisolar, and some combined ritual cycles with seasonal or political timekeeping. Their main problem was simple but difficult: lunar months, solar years, planetary cycles, and ritual cycles do not divide evenly into each other. The strongest evidence shows that many ancient societies made careful unaided-eye observations and built durable systems for agriculture, ritual, taxation, temple service, royal inscriptions, and historical memory. Egypt used a 365-day civil calendar, Mesopotamia developed sophisticated lunar and planetary records, Greece and Rome inherited and reformed complex civic calendars, and Mesoamerica used interlocking 260-day, 365-day, Venus, lunar, and Long Count systems.

Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky and has real importance in ancient astronomy. In Egypt, its heliacal rising was associated with seasonal reckoning and later Sothic chronology. Sirius also appears in broader mythic and calendrical discussions because it is visually prominent and seasonally useful. The strongest Sirius alignment theories are limited and contextual: Egyptian calendar traditions, temple orientations in some cases, and ritual astronomy tied to Sopdet. The weakest versions claim that pyramids, temples, and sacred sites worldwide form a deliberate Sirius network. Those claims usually lack precise measurements, ancient textual support, or a clear transmission path.

The Dogon Sirius claim became famous through Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen’s 1950 article on a Sudanese Sirius system and through Robert Temple’s 1976 book *The Sirius Mystery*. The popular version says Dogon tradition knew that Sirius has an invisible dense companion with a roughly 50-year orbit and that this knowledge must have come from an ancient advanced source. The evidence is much weaker than the popular version suggests. Griaule and Dieterlen reported remarkable material, but later fieldwork by Walter van Beek could not reproduce the same Sirius system. Informants gave inconsistent answers, some linked the information to Griaule himself, and there is no clear independent pre-contact record of the detailed astronomical claims.

Maya astronomy was sophisticated, but it was not modern astrophysics. Maya scribes and ritual specialists tracked cycles that mattered for religion, kingship, divination, warfare timing, agriculture, and historical recordkeeping. The Dresden Codex preserves major astronomical tables, especially Venus and eclipse material. Xultun shows that complex calculations were used before the surviving Postclassic codices. The strongest evidence supports highly skilled unaided-eye astronomy tied to interlocking calendars. The weakest claims say the Maya predicted modern disasters, knew hidden galactic physics, or inherited their astronomy from a lost global civilization. Those claims usually overread real Maya achievements.

The Antikythera Mechanism is a fragmentary bronze geared device recovered from a shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera in 1901. It is usually dated to the late Hellenistic period, roughly the 2nd to 1st century BC, and is widely described as the earliest known geared analogue astronomical computer. The strongest evidence does not require a lost civilization or modern electrical technology. The mechanism is remarkable because its surviving gears, inscriptions, dials, and X-ray CT scans show that Greek makers could mechanically model lunar cycles, eclipse cycles, calendar displays, and probably more complex astronomical relationships than once assumed. The remaining uncertainties concern its full front display, exact workshop, exact date, and how common similar devices once were.

Stonehenge is a Neolithic and Bronze Age monument complex on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. English Heritage summarizes the site as a monument built in stages: an early henge about 3000 BC, the major stone settings around 2500 BC, later rearrangements, and surrounding Bronze Age barrows. The strongest astronomical claim is that Stonehenge’s main axis relates to the solstices, especially midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset. This does not mean Stonehenge was a modern observatory or a precise scientific instrument. It means its builders deliberately embedded sky, season, landscape, death, ceremony, and social memory into the monument.

Ancient global contact theory is not one claim. It is a family of claims. Some are strongly supported, such as Norse presence at L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, now precisely anchored to AD 1021 by Nature research using a radiocarbon spike. Some are plausible or increasingly supported, such as limited Polynesian and Native American contact in the eastern Pacific around AD 1200. Many others are weak, especially claims that Egypt, Atlantis, Phoenicia, Rome, China, or a vanished Ice Age civilization created most ancient monuments around the world. The key rule for this hub is simple: contact is real in many places, but contact is not automatically proof of a single global civilization, hidden master map, or suppressed world history.

Ancient and early modern maps are real, complex, and often more sophisticated than casual readers expect. The problem is that modern alternative-history arguments frequently treat map errors, speculative southern continents, portolan conventions, mythical islands, and copied source traditions as proof of hidden ancient geography. The Piri Reis map is the central claim object. It is a real 1513 Ottoman map that preserves parts of Atlantic geography and likely used multiple sources, including Portuguese and possibly Columbus-related material. The weak claim is that it shows Antarctica before modern discovery, sometimes ice-free. That claim is not well supported. The better explanation is that the southern landmass is a mix of South American coastline, cartographic distortion, and Terra Australis-style expectation.

Pre-Columbian contact is not a single claim. It ranges from well-supported evidence, such as Norse activity at L'Anse aux Meadows, to emerging and still-debated evidence for Polynesian and South American interaction, to weak claims about Egyptians, Phoenicians, Israelites, Chinese fleets, Africans, Romans, or Atlanteans reshaping American civilizations. The evidence is uneven. Norse contact with northeastern North America is firmly established by archaeology. Pre-European contact between Polynesian and Indigenous American peoples has strong genomic support from modern-population and ancient-Rapanui studies, while voyage direction, exact meeting place, number and scale of events, and cultural consequences remain unresolved. Most other sweeping claims lack archaeological context, settlement evidence, securely dated artifacts, inscriptions, or credible transmission chains.
