The monument is impressive because late Neolithic communities selected, shaped, transported, raised, and joined massive stones using the materials, tools, practical knowledge, and coordinated labor documented or reasonably reconstructed for the period. The engineering case should be made from archaeological evidence rather than from a checklist of absent modern technologies. That does not make the monument non-human. The evidence supports large-scale Neolithic cooperation, ritual planning, stone transport, and symbolic landscape design. Recent stone-source research has made Stonehenge even more interesting: many sarsens likely came from West Woods in Wiltshire, bluestones from west Wales, and a 2024 Nature study argues that the Altar Stone likely came from northeast Scotland.

Exact rituals are not recoverable from the stones alone, but the landscape clearly required organized labor and shared symbolic rules.

The Longyou Caves are large artificial caverns excavated in Cretaceous argillaceous siltstone near Longyou County, Zhejiang, and brought to modern attention after pond draining in 1992. Engineering literature describes the system as about 2,000 years old, but that conventional label is not a substitute for a published context-by-context archaeological chronology; the exact date, sponsor, and function remain unresolved. The Huashan Grottoes, near the Xin'an River in Anhui, look similar in some public retellings but are probably much later. A lichenometric dating study argued that they were excavated during the late Ming period, roughly 1551-1667 CE. That makes them useful for comparison because they show that large hand-cut Chinese grotto works could be produced in historical periods without requiring lost machinery.

English Heritage summarizes the site as a monument built in stages: an early henge about 3000 BC, the major stone settings around 2500 BC, later rearrangements, and surrounding Bronze Age barrows. The strongest astronomical claim is that Stonehenge’s main axis relates to the solstices, especially midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset. This does not mean Stonehenge was a modern observatory or a precise scientific instrument. It means its builders deliberately embedded sky, season, landscape, death, ceremony, and social memory into the monument.

Jericho is not one simple city from one period. Tell es-Sultan contains a deep sequence of occupation that includes Pre-Pottery Neolithic settlement, major early architecture, Bronze Age city phases, destruction layers, abandonment phases, and later cultural memory. UNESCO inscribed Ancient Jericho / Tell es-Sultan as a World Heritage Site in 2023, emphasizing its long sequence and early Neolithic urban-like features. The Neolithic wall and tower are the most important early-civilization evidence. They show organized labor and complex community life long before later kingdoms and empires. The later biblical Jericho debate is separate. Archaeologists disagree on details, but the dominant scholarly view does not support the simple claim that the excavated destruction layer neatly matches the traditional biblical conquest date.
