Geomagnetic Reversal
A geomagnetic reversal is a change in Earth's magnetic field where the planet's magnetic north and magnetic south swap polarity. This is not the same as Earth physically flipping over. It does not mean the geographic North Pole moves to the equator. It does not mean continents instantly shift. It means the main dipole component of Earth's magnetic field changes orientation. The most recent full reversal is the Matuyama–Brunhes reversal: the final polarity flip is dated to about 773,000 years ago, after precursor excursions around 795,000 and 784,000 years ago. ‘About 780,000 years ago’ may be retained only as a clearly rounded legacy figure.
Around 42–40 thousand years ago, Earth’s magnetic field weakened sharply and its direction underwent a short-lived global excursion before returning to the prior stable polarity; it did not settle into a long-lived reversed chron. The strongest evidence supports a short-lived, global geomagnetic disturbance with increased cosmogenic isotope production. The debated part is how much environmental and biological damage it caused. A 2021 Science paper argued that the Laschamp Event, combined with low solar activity, may have triggered major environmental stress. That claim is influential but not settled.
Catastrophic ‘pole shift’ is a claim cluster, not one mechanism: versions variously allege sudden reorientation of the rotation axis, rapid whole-lithosphere displacement, or misuse magnetic-pole motion as if it moved the geographic poles. Each mechanism must be named and assessed separately. Most internet pole-shift content depends on conflation. It takes real magnetic field changes and treats them as evidence for sudden geographic movement. It may also mix in Earth crust displacement, Nibiru, ancient maps, Velikovsky, Edgar Cayce, Graham Hancock, solar micronova claims, and flood myths.
Earth Crust Displacement Theory is a specific version of pole-shift theory. It should not be confused with plate tectonics, magnetic reversal, or ordinary continental drift. Hapgood argued that Earth's crust could move as a shell over the interior, relocating the poles relative to the continents and explaining ice ages, ancient maps, and sudden catastrophes. Albert Einstein wrote the foreword to Hapgood’s 1958 Earth’s Shifting Crust. Treat the foreword as a primary historical document showing engagement with the proposal, not validation; remove the unsupported causal claim that the foreword ‘made the theory famous’ unless a reception-history source is added.
Those facts do not by themselves establish a worldwide advanced civilization, a single synchronized reset, survivor-led re-civilization, or a coordinated cover-up; each is a separate claim requiring its own evidence and source history. The theory is useful for the website because it connects many topics the public already links together: Atlantis, Younger Dryas catastrophism, Graham Hancock, flood myths, Tartaria, mud flood claims, ancient astronauts, world-age cycles, and post-flood re-civilization. It should be handled as a claim review with multiple subclaims and evidence ratings.
In Worlds in Collision, Velikovsky proposed that Venus was expelled from Jupiter as a comet-like body and passed near Earth around the time he associated with the Exodus, in the fifteenth century BCE; he then proposed later Mars–Earth encounters in the eighth and seventh centuries BCE. The strongest value of this topic is not that Velikovsky was right. The value is that his work became a key node in modern catastrophist, fringe-history, Electric Universe, Saturn Myth, and ancient-myth-as-astronomy networks. The page should separate legitimate study of ancient disaster stories from Velikovsky's unsupported celestial mechanics.
The Saturn Myth is not simply the normal Roman god Saturn. In alternative-history circles, it is a claim that many ancient myths, symbols, gods, and golden-age stories point to a real ancient sky configuration involving Saturn, Venus, Mars, and Earth. In the strongest version, Saturn was once visually dominant in Earth's sky, later planets moved violently, and ancient religions encoded memories of this catastrophe. The conventional view is different. Saturn is a visible planet that ancient cultures tracked, named, ritualized, and mythologized in many ways. Ancient Saturn, Kronos, Ninurta, El, Ptah, and other figures cannot be collapsed into one universal planetary memory without careful source work. The Saturn Myth is useful for mapping modern alternative cosmology and myth interpretation, but it is weak as astronomy and weak as global comparative mythology when presented as a literal reconstruction of the solar system.
Electric Universe is not the same as plasma physics. Plasma physics is a real and important field used in solar physics, magnetospheres, auroras, astrophysical jets, accretion disks, and space weather. Electric Universe takes that real plasma language and expands it into a broad alternative cosmology that rejects or radically reinterprets the Big Bang, dark matter, black holes, standard stellar fusion, impact cratering, comet science, and sometimes ancient mythology. The claim network is important because it connects Saturn Myth, Velikovsky-style catastrophism, Thunderbolts media, ancient thunderbolt symbolism, solar outburst ideas, comet claims, and internet alternative-science communities. The evidence rating is mixed by subclaim: real plasma physics is strong science; Electric Universe as a replacement for modern cosmology is weak and mostly unsupported.
