CM-012

Paleolithic Period

Stone artifacts preserve a long record of changing technologies and lifeways, while organic tools, speech, performance, and many coastal sites are underrepresented.

2
CM-014

Lascaux Cave

Discovered by four local teenagers in September 1940, Lascaux contains large animal compositions and dense engravings distributed through spaces including the Hall of the Bulls, Axial Gallery, Nave, Apse, Shaft, and Chamber of Felines. The original cave closed in 1963 after visitation destabilized its environment; replicas now provide public access.

CM-015

Chauvet Cave

Sealed for millennia and rediscovered in 1994, Chauvet contains more than 1,000 images alongside charcoal, footprints, torch marks, cave-bear remains, and unusually intact cave floors.

CM-016

Gobustan Rock Art

More than 6,000 engravings, together with caves, settlements, and burials, document repeated use of Gobustan from deep prehistory into historical periods. Boats, animals, human figures, hunting, fishing, and group scenes are genuine motifs, but they do not by themselves prove migration to Scandinavia or a lost maritime civilization.

CM-017

Tassili n'Ajjer

More than 15,000 recorded drawings and engravings depict wild fauna, cattle, people, horses, camels, and symbolic scenes across a long and uneven sequence. The art is strong evidence for Saharan environmental and cultural change, but exact dates and meanings vary by panel.

CM-018

Aboriginal Star Lore

Public and community-authorized sources document sophisticated observations of stars, the Milky Way, the Sun, Moon, and other celestial phenomena. The strongest account remains regional and custodial: it does not turn hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions into one system or disclose knowledge that communities keep restricted.
