The Missoula Floods were enormous late Ice Age floods produced when the Cordilleran Ice Sheet blocked the Clark Fork drainage near northern Idaho and created Glacial Lake Missoula in western Montana. When the ice dam failed, water rushed westward across Idaho, eastern Washington, the Columbia Gorge, and into the Pacific drainage system. These floods carved and modified the Channeled Scabland, deposited huge gravel bars, moved erratic boulders, formed giant current ripples, and left slackwater deposits in temporary flood lakes. The floods are one of the clearest cases where a catastrophic geological interpretation, first strongly advanced by J Harlen Bretz in the 1920s, was resisted, tested, refined, and eventually accepted. Later work by Joseph Pardee, Victor Baker, Richard Waitt, Brian Atwater, John Clague, Jim O'Connor, and others helped turn the floods from a controversial interpretation into a mainstream geologic model.
The Storegga Slide was a massive submarine landslide on the Norwegian continental margin. Around 8150 to 8200 years ago, part of the seafloor failed and generated a tsunami that affected coastlines around the North Atlantic, including Norway, Shetland, mainland Scotland, the Faroe Islands, and possibly parts of Greenland and Denmark. The landslide and tsunami are strongly supported by seafloor mapping, sediment cores, tsunami sand layers, radiocarbon dating, and numerical modeling. The public story often connects Storegga to Doggerland, the now-submerged Mesolithic landscape in the southern North Sea. That connection is real, but it is often overstated. Storegga likely caused dangerous regional inundation in some coastal zones, but Doggerland was already shrinking because of postglacial sea-level rise. Current modeling suggests the tsunami was not necessarily the single cause of Doggerland abandonment or final submergence.
Doggerland was real. During the late Pleistocene and early Holocene, large parts of the southern North Sea were dry land, with rivers, wetlands, animals, and human hunter-gatherer activity. As climate warmed and sea levels rose, Doggerland gradually shrank into islands and lowlands before disappearing beneath the North Sea. The Storegga Slide tsunami around 8,150 years ago may have affected remaining low-lying parts of Doggerland. Older public stories sometimes describe that tsunami as the single event that destroyed Doggerland. Newer research is more careful: long-term sea-level rise had already reduced Doggerland dramatically, and the tsunami was likely a severe regional event rather than the sole cause of disappearance.
Sundaland was real. During glacial low sea levels, large parts of the Sunda Shelf were dry land. Rivers crossed the shelf, coastlines shifted dramatically, and people, animals, and plants moved through a very different Southeast Asian landscape. As sea levels rose after the Last Glacial Maximum, much of that landscape flooded. The evidence for Sundaland as a paleogeographic region is strong. The evidence for it as an advanced lost civilization is much weaker. Stephen Oppenheimer’s Eden in the East helped popularize the idea that flooding in Southeast Asia scattered peoples, myths, and cultural innovations outward. That theory is interesting and source-rich in parts, but it goes beyond what archaeology can currently prove.
Postglacial inundation of former coastlines and the existence of submerged prehistoric sites are well established. The global quantity, character, and social complexity of the missing record cannot yet be measured, so this evidence supports a research gap rather than a civilization theory. The stronger alternative version argues that advanced coastal civilizations, possibly with global navigation, monumental architecture, astronomy, or lost technologies, were drowned after the Ice Age and remembered in flood myths. That stronger version remains unproven. The theory is worth tracking because the research gap is real, but the gap should not be treated as proof.
The cautious version of Ice Age Civilization Theory is reasonable: Ice Age humans were intelligent, symbolically complex, mobile, skilled, and capable of art, long-distance exchange, seafaring, ritual, and sophisticated ecological knowledge. Archaeology increasingly shows deep human complexity before farming. The stronger fringe version claims a global advanced civilization, often with high technology, astronomy, architecture, and worldwide influence, was destroyed at the end of the Ice Age or during the Younger Dryas. That stronger version has not been demonstrated. It may point to real gaps in submerged archaeology and late Pleistocene cultural complexity, but direct evidence for a global lost civilization remains weak.
