Ancient China

Ancient China did not appear as one sudden civilization. It developed through many regional Neolithic and Bronze Age cultures across the Yellow River, Yangtze River, West Liao River, Sichuan Basin, and other regions. Major early cultures include Hongshan, Liangzhu, Yangshao, Longshan, Erlitou, Erligang, and Shang. The strongest early dynastic evidence begins with the Shang dynasty, especially late Shang oracle-bone inscriptions from Anyang. Earlier dynasties such as Xia remain debated because later texts describe them, but direct written evidence from the supposed Xia period is not yet comparable to Shang oracle bones.

Liangzhu

Liangzhu is one of the strongest archaeological cases for complex society in Neolithic China. The Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, date roughly 3300-2300 BCE and include a walled city, elite cemeteries, platforms, jade objects, and a large water management system. The evidence supports early urbanism, social ranking, ritual power, and large-scale organized labor. Liangzhu does not need a lost-technology explanation. Its engineering is impressive because a Neolithic society managed wetlands, rice agriculture, labor, and authority at large scale.

Hongshan

Hongshan is a Neolithic culture centered in northeastern China, especially the West Liao River region, usually dated broadly around 4700-2900 BCE. Its best-known evidence includes jade objects, pig-dragon forms, elite burials, ceremonial architecture, and the ritual landscape at Niuheliang. The evidence supports a complex ritual society with social ranking, specialized jade production, and symbolic systems before later dynastic China. It does not support claims of aliens, literal dragons, or high technology. Hongshan matters because it complicates a simple Yellow River-only origin story for Chinese civilization.
