Nag Hammadi Library
The Nag Hammadi discovery comprises thirteen late-antique papyrus codices conventionally designated Nag Hammadi Codices I–XIII and preserving 52 tractates, including duplicate copies of several works. Codex XIII survives as eight leaves removed in antiquity and tucked into the cover of Codex VI. The collection includes works commonly classified as Sethian or Valentinian, as well as other Christian, Hermetic, philosophical and wisdom materials. Its importance is major. Before the discovery, many Gnostic traditions were known mostly through hostile church critics. Nag Hammadi gave scholars primary texts from the traditions themselves.
