Overview
Antikythera Mechanism
The Antikythera Mechanism is a fragmentary bronze geared device recovered from a shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera in 1901. It is usually dated to the late Hellenistic period, roughly the 2nd to 1st century BC, and is widely described as the earliest known geared analogue astronomical computer. The strongest evidence does not require a lost civilization or modern electrical technology. The mechanism is remarkable because its surviving gears, inscriptions, dials, and X-ray CT scans show that Greek makers could mechanically model lunar cycles, eclipse cycles, calendar displays, and probably more complex astronomical relationships than once assumed. The remaining uncertainties concern its full front display, exact workshop, exact date, and how common similar devices once were.

The Antikythera Mechanism was not a clock in the modern sense and not an electric machine. It was a hand-operated geared calculator. It shows that at least some Hellenistic Greek craftsmen could combine astronomy, mathematics, inscriptional labeling, and precision gear cutting into a compact device. The mainstream interpretation is that the Antikythera Mechanism is a real Hellenistic astronomical calculator. Its sophistication is not in doubt. What remains debated is the exact reconstruction of missing sections.
The device likely displayed or predicted:
- Lunar phase and lunar motion.
- Solar calendar information.
- Eclipse cycles, especially through a Saros-related display.
- Calendar cycles and possibly games or festival cycles.
- More complex front-dial astronomical displays, depending on reconstruction.
A 2024 analysis by Graham Woan and Joseph Bayley re-examined the calendar ring hole count from published X-ray data. Their model estimated about 355 holes, and they argued that 360 was strongly disfavoured while 365 was not plausible under their assumptions. This supports a lunar-calendar interpretation for that ring rather than a simple 365-day Egyptian solar calendar.
