Geomagnetic Reversal
A geomagnetic reversal is a change in Earth's magnetic field where the planet's magnetic north and magnetic south swap polarity. This is not the same as Earth physically flipping over. It does not mean the geographic North Pole moves to the equator. It does not mean continents instantly shift. It means the main dipole component of Earth's magnetic field changes orientation. The most recent full reversal is the Matuyama–Brunhes reversal: the final polarity flip is dated to about 773,000 years ago, after precursor excursions around 795,000 and 784,000 years ago. ‘About 780,000 years ago’ may be retained only as a clearly rounded legacy figure.

A geomagnetic reversal is a change in Earth's magnetic field where the planet's magnetic north and magnetic south swap polarity. This is not the same as Earth physically flipping over. It does not mean the geographic North Pole moves to the equator. It does not mean continents instantly shift. It means the main dipole component of Earth's magnetic field changes orientation. The most recent full reversal is the Matuyama–Brunhes reversal: the final polarity flip is dated to about 773,000 years ago, after precursor excursions around 795,000 and 784,000 years ago. ‘About 780,000 years ago’ may be retained only as a clearly rounded legacy figure.
