Gunung Padang
Gunung Padang is a real megalithic terrace site made with columnar andesite stones on a hill in West Java. It is culturally and archaeologically important even without the extreme claims attached to it. The disputed claim comes mainly from Danny Hilman Natawidjaja and collaborators, who argued that the hill contains multiple buried construction layers and that some layers could be extremely old. A 2023 paper promoting this interpretation in Archaeological Prospection was retracted in 2024. The retraction stated that radiocarbon dates came from soil samples that were not reliably associated with artifacts or man-made features, so the dates did not establish the claimed ancient construction.

Plain-language explanation
Gunung Padang is not a fake site. It has real terraces, stone alignments, and cultural importance. The debate is about what lies beneath and how old the construction is. The extreme claim says the hill is a buried stepped pyramid built in several phases, with some layers far older than recognized monumental architecture.
