Hall of Records

The Hall of Records is best known through Edgar Cayce's psychic readings, which claimed that records from Atlantis were hidden near the Sphinx and would eventually be discovered. The idea later merged with older esoteric Egypt, Atlantis speculation, Sphinx water erosion theories, Giza hidden chamber claims, and internet stories about suppressed underground libraries. There is no confirmed archaeological Hall of Records under the Sphinx. The claim has strong value as a modern myth and source-trail topic because it influenced public expectations around Giza. It also helps explain why ordinary archaeological surveys, void detections, caves, repair shafts, and scanning anomalies are often reinterpreted online as proof of a hidden Atlantean archive.

Research detail

Topic ID: CM-118 Last reviewed: 2026-08-10 Corrections: /corrections/ Change history: Recorded in the Connected Atlas topic changelog.

Overview

Plain-language explanation

The Hall of Records story says that a hidden archive preserves lost knowledge from Atlantis or an earlier civilization. In the most familiar version, this archive is under the Sphinx or in a chamber connected to it. The records are sometimes said to explain human origins, astronomy, ancient technology, world cycles, or the true story of civilization. This is not an ancient Egyptian claim in the straightforward sense. There is no known Old Kingdom inscription saying that the Sphinx guards an Atlantean library. The claim is modern, and its strongest source trail runs through Edgar Cayce, not through pharaonic Egyptian texts.

Historical and scholarly context

Giza is full of tombs, temples, shafts, quarries, causeways, later burials, natural limestone features, and restoration history. Subsurface complexity is expected. That does not mean every void or anomaly is an ancient archive.

Egyptian civilization did preserve records, but known Egyptian record keeping was tied to temples, administration, tomb inscriptions, papyri, ostraca, stelae, and monumental inscriptions. A hidden Atlantean archive under the Sphinx is not part of the secure Egyptian textual or archaeological record.

The conventional view is that claims about a Hall of Records require direct physical evidence: a chamber, context, inscriptions, datable material, documented excavation, and peer-reviewed reporting. So far, the Cayce-style claim does not meet that standard.

What the evidence supports

The strongest support is not archaeological proof. It is claim-history support. Edgar Cayce's readings clearly exist and clearly influenced modern Giza lore. The Hall of Records is a real and important story inside modern alternative Egypt.

The story also connects to a broader human pattern: sacred hidden books, buried wisdom, lost libraries, underground chambers, and future revelation. That symbolic pattern is strong, even when the physical claim remains weak.

Limits and disputed claims

  • Psychic readings are not archaeological evidence.
  • No confirmed excavation has produced the claimed archive.
  • Real Giza scanning projects do not validate Cayce's Hall of Records.
  • “Hall of Records,” “Halls of Amenti,” Atlantis, and Egyptian underworld texts are often blended without source control.
  • Claims of suppression usually lack documentation.
  • Viral claims often use scientific-looking scanning language without peer-reviewed archaeological confirmation.

Claim status

  • Unsupported: Cayce-derived sources document a modern Hall of Records claim near the Sphinx, but the listed archaeological and scan records do not establish an Atlantean archive.
  • Unsupported: No listed archaeological or scan source confirms a Hall of Records beneath or near the Sphinx.
  • Well supported: Edgar Cayce’s Atlantis readings are a principal modern genealogy source for the Hall of Records claim.
  • Unsupported: A verified void inside Khufu’s pyramid is not evidence for a Hall of Records beneath the Sphinx.
