Kali Yuga

Kali Yuga is usually described in later Hindu tradition as the fourth and most morally degraded age in a cycle of four yugas: Satya, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali. In common Puranic chronology, Kali Yuga begins after the departure of Krishna, often dated to 3102 BCE, and lasts 432,000 years. This is sacred cosmology, not normal archaeological chronology. The term is now often used as shorthand for social collapse, moral decline, corruption, spiritual confusion, and materialism. The traditional sources do connect the age with declining dharma, but they also include devotional interpretations where spiritual practice remains possible, and sometimes especially powerful, in Kali Yuga.

Topic ID: CM-154 Last reviewed: 2026-08-10 Corrections: /corrections/ Change history: Recorded in the Connected Atlas topic changelog.

Overview

Plain-language explanation

In the common Hindu yuga system, time moves through repeating cycles. The four main ages are Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga. The moral and spiritual condition of the world declines across the cycle. Satya Yuga is the age of full dharma. Kali Yuga is the age in which dharma is weakest. The common image is dharma as a bull standing on four legs. In the best age, all four legs remain. By the final age, only one leg remains. This is symbolic language for moral decline, social disorder, greed, spiritual forgetfulness, and the weakening of truth.

Historical and scholarly context

Kali Yuga is best understood as sacred cosmology and religious time. The standard yuga durations are patterned numbers: Satya Yuga 1,728,000 years; Treta Yuga 1,296,000 years; Dvapara Yuga 864,000 years; Kali Yuga 432,000 years; total mahayuga 4,320,000 years.

These numbers are meaningful inside Hindu cosmology. They are not independent archaeological dates. The system invites numerical speculation, but pattern alone is not proof of a secret scientific code.

What the evidence supports

The strongest evidence is textual and traditional. Kali Yuga is a real and important concept in Hindu cosmology, epic thought, and Puranic tradition. It gives a durable religious language for thinking about moral decline, time, and renewal.

Limits and disputed claims

Weak versions treat sacred chronology as archaeological dating, combine yugas with Atlantis or pole shifts without source control, quote texts without naming source or translation, or claim an imminent end date while ignoring the standard 432,000-year duration.

Claim status

  • Well supported: In many Hindu textual and interpretive traditions, Kali Yuga is the present and fourth yuga, characterized by decline in dharma.
  • Well supported: The listed sources document Kali Yuga through Purāṇic, calendrical, and devotional traditions; they do not independently date an archaeological world age.
  • Well supported: The Viṣṇu Purāṇa and Bhāgavata Purāṇa are named textual witnesses for Kali-age cosmology and devotional or eschatological interpretation.
  • Well supported: Within the cited Purāṇic traditions, Kali Yuga provides a framework for moral decline, cosmic time, devotion, and eventual renewal.
  • Misrepresented source: Using The Holy Science as if it stated the standard Purāṇic yuga duration would conflate Sri Yukteswar’s later reinterpretation with a distinct textual chronology.
