Overview
Missoula Floods
The Missoula Floods were enormous late Ice Age floods produced when the Cordilleran Ice Sheet blocked the Clark Fork drainage near northern Idaho and created Glacial Lake Missoula in western Montana. When the ice dam failed, water rushed westward across Idaho, eastern Washington, the Columbia Gorge, and into the Pacific drainage system. These floods carved and modified the Channeled Scabland, deposited huge gravel bars, moved erratic boulders, formed giant current ripples, and left slackwater deposits in temporary flood lakes. The floods are one of the clearest cases where a catastrophic geological interpretation, first strongly advanced by J Harlen Bretz in the 1920s, was resisted, tested, refined, and eventually accepted. Later work by Joseph Pardee, Victor Baker, Richard Waitt, Brian Atwater, John Clague, Jim O'Connor, and others helped turn the floods from a controversial interpretation into a mainstream geologic model.

Plain-language explanation
During the last Ice Age, the Cordilleran Ice Sheet blocked drainage in the northern Rocky Mountains. Water backed up behind the ice and formed Glacial Lake Missoula. When the ice dam failed, a huge volume of water escaped. This was not a normal river flood. It was a glacial lake outburst flood, the same general class of event as a jokulhlaup, but on an enormous scale. The water moved across the Columbia Plateau with enough force to strip soil, scour basalt, cut channels, create dry falls, leave huge gravel bars, and form giant current ripples. Some areas were eroded deeply. Other areas accumulated repeated flood deposits. The landscape did not need an asteroid impact or a global flood to form. It needed a large ice-dammed lake, repeated dam failure, and a path across a vulnerable basalt landscape.
