Panspermia is a family of hypotheses, not one claim. Evidence is strong for extraterrestrial delivery of prebiotic ingredients, weaker for viable microbes surviving a complete planetary transfer, and absent for intentional alien seeding of Earth.

Plain-language explanation

Meteorites and asteroid samples show that space chemistry can supply amino acids, nucleobases, sugars, and other organic compounds. Rocks also travel between Mars and Earth. Those facts make some forms of panspermia testable, but no extraterrestrial microbe, cell, genome, or fossil has been confirmed.

Historical and scholarly context

Mainstream research supports organic molecule delivery from space much more strongly than biological panspermia. Carbonaceous meteorites and asteroid samples contain amino acids, nucleobases, and other organic compounds. Material exchange between planets happens. Some microbes can survive extreme conditions under laboratory or space-exposure tests.

Mainstream research does not confirm that life began somewhere else and arrived on Earth. No confirmed extraterrestrial microbe, DNA, cell, or fossil organism has been found. Panspermia also does not automatically solve abiogenesis. If life came from elsewhere, the question remains: where and how did life first arise?

What the evidence supports

The strongest evidence supports organic delivery, not biological panspermia. Carbonaceous meteorites contain organic compounds, asteroid samples contain organic molecules, and planetary material can move between worlds. Microbial survival experiments show that some organisms can survive harsh conditions when shielded. These facts make panspermia scientifically discussable.

Limits and disputed claims

No confirmed extraterrestrial microbe, cell, DNA, RNA, or fossil organism has been found. Organic molecules are not life. ALH84001 remains controversial and is not accepted as proof of Mars life. Ancient astronaut versions often leap from “life ingredients came from space” to “aliens engineered humans,” which is unsupported.
