Overview
Sundaland
Sundaland was real. During glacial low sea levels, large parts of the Sunda Shelf were dry land. Rivers crossed the shelf, coastlines shifted dramatically, and people, animals, and plants moved through a very different Southeast Asian landscape. As sea levels rose after the Last Glacial Maximum, much of that landscape flooded. The evidence for Sundaland as a paleogeographic region is strong. The evidence for it as an advanced lost civilization is much weaker. Stephen Oppenheimer’s Eden in the East helped popularize the idea that flooding in Southeast Asia scattered peoples, myths, and cultural innovations outward. That theory is interesting and source-rich in parts, but it goes beyond what archaeology can currently prove.

Human presence in the broader region is real. The speculative part is the claim that Sundaland held an advanced civilization that seeded myths, agriculture, or culture across the world.
Historical and scholarly context
The conventional view is that Sundaland was a real Pleistocene landmass and a major ecological and migration corridor. Sea-level rise after the Last Glacial Maximum drowned vast lowland areas. This likely affected human populations, movement, and memory, although the details remain difficult to reconstruct because many key sites are now underwater.
Archaeology in Southeast Asia does not currently support a continent-scale urban civilization on the Sunda Shelf before the known early civilizations of the Near East, Egypt, the Indus Valley, or China. That does not mean the region was empty or unimportant. It means the strongest evidence supports human occupation, adaptation, migration, and environmental change, not a confirmed high civilization.
The serious research problem is preservation and access. Submerged shelves are hard to survey, and tropical coastal environments do not always preserve archaeological material well. Sundaland may hold major future discoveries, but the current evidence must be kept separate from the stronger claims.
