Overview
The black mat is real. It is not one single worldwide ash layer. In the strict geoarchaeological sense, it refers to organic-rich wetland soils, marsh deposits, diatomites, peats, and similar dark or gray-white deposits that formed around springs, wetlands, pond margins, and valley bottoms during the late Pleistocene to early Holocene transition. C. Vance Haynes popularized the term in discussions of Clovis sites and noted that these deposits often overlie the last clear traces of terminal Pleistocene megafauna and Clovis-era activity. That made the black mat important before the impact theory became popular.
Plain-language explanation
A black mat is best understood as a deposit type, not a single event. At many sites, it appears as a dark, organic-rich layer that formed when local landscapes became wetter or more stable. Springs, marshes, shallow ponds, valley bottoms, and groundwater-fed settings can produce dark soils and sediment because plant matter accumulates faster than it fully decomposes. At Paleoindian sites, this matters because the black mat can cover older surfaces. Archaeologists may find Clovis artifacts, mammoth remains, or late Pleistocene animal evidence below the mat, then a dark wetland layer above it. That creates the impression of a boundary: something changed in the landscape.
Historical and scholarly context
The conventional view does not need an impact to explain black mats. These deposits can form when wetlands expand, groundwater rises, springs become active, stream valleys aggrade, or organic matter accumulates under wetter conditions.
The Younger Dryas itself is a real abrupt climate episode. The dominant paleoclimate explanation involves changes in North Atlantic circulation, meltwater routing, and deglacial climate instability, not a confirmed impact. That conventional climate context can still produce major regional hydrological changes, including wetland expansion in some places and drying in others.
This is why the black mat is important but not decisive. It may mark landscape change at many sites, but a stratigraphic change is not automatically evidence of a cosmic cause.
