What the evidence supports
The strongest support is for the narrow claim that extreme solar events happen and can be dangerous. The isotope record is important because it extends the record beyond modern instruments. Kepler observations also show that Sun-like stars can have extreme flare behavior, although the Sun's age and rotation limit direct comparison.
The story support is also strong for why people connect this topic to ancient catastrophe myths. Sudden auroras, sky-fire stories, eclipses, comets, meteors, volcanic sunsets, and unusual atmospheric phenomena can all become mythic memory.
