Overview
Amazon Earthworks, Geoglyphs, and Water Systems
Amazonian earthworks are among the clearest evidence that ancient Amazonian societies shaped the rainforest and wetlands at large scales. Some earthworks were settlements, some were roads, some were canals, some were raised agricultural fields, some were water-control features, and some may have been ceremonial or social spaces. Their function depends on local context. The main mistake is to treat every earthwork as the same thing. Acre geoglyphs are not identical to Llanos de Mojos raised fields. Casarabe mound centers are not identical to Upper Xingu plaza villages. The shared pattern is not one empire. It is repeated Indigenous landscape engineering in different ecological zones.

An earthwork is a human-made modification of earth: a ditch, mound, raised field, embankment, road, platform, canal, or enclosure. In Amazonia, earthworks survive because soil shapes remain even when wood buildings decay. A geoglyph is a large ground design or geometric earth feature, often visible from above. A water system includes canals, raised fields, fish weirs, ponds, reservoirs, and drainage features. Amazonian engineering often worked with seasonal flooding rather than against it. Raised fields kept crops above wet ground. Canals moved people, fish, or water. Causeways connected dry mounds. Ring ditches may have marked settlements, defenses, drainage, boundaries, or social spaces. Fish weirs turned seasonal water movement into food production.
