Amazon Lidar Discoveries
Amazon lidar discoveries have changed the public picture of pre-Columbian Amazonia. They do not prove a single lost empire, a city of gold, or a high-tech vanished civilization. They do show that several Amazonian regions contained large, planned, engineered, and long-lived Indigenous landscapes before European contact. The strongest evidence comes from peer-reviewed remote-sensing and field studies in Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil, and the southern Amazon rim. Lidar has revealed details that are hard to see on the ground: rectangular platforms, road networks, mound centers, canals, moats, causeways, geoglyphs, and settlement layouts. These findings support a model of low-density urbanism and garden urbanism, where people organized large territories through roads, plazas, farms, forests, waterworks, and earth architecture rather than stone-built cities.

Plain-language explanation
Lidar stands for light detection and ranging. In archaeology, aircraft or drones send laser pulses toward the ground and measure the return signal. Analysts can filter vegetation from the data and create a terrain model that exposes subtle rises, ditches, canals, platforms, mounds, and roads that are difficult to see under forest canopy. In Amazonia this matters because many ancient structures were made of earth, wood, thatch, and managed vegetation rather than stone. Wood and thatch decay. Earthworks remain as low relief features, but dense vegetation hides them. Lidar helps archaeologists see the shape of the landscape, then fieldwork tests whether those shapes are archaeological.
