Ancient Psychedelics and Ritual Practice
There is strong evidence that some ancient communities used psychoactive plants in ritual or funerary contexts. The best evidence comes from chemical analysis, residue analysis, archaeobotanical remains, iconography, paraphernalia, and later ethnographic continuity. Examples include Bronze Age Menorca hair containing ephedrine, atropine, and scopolamine; cannabis residues in ancient Central Asian funerary contexts; Andean snuff paraphernalia and Chavín ritual evidence; and long-standing debates over San Pedro cactus, vilca, cohoba, and other plants. The weaker claim is that psychedelics explain all religion, all ancient gods, all “forbidden knowledge,” or the origin of civilization itself. Psychoactive plants can be part of ritual systems, but they do not replace politics, ecology, architecture, food production, trade, kinship, warfare, healing, myth, and social hierarchy. The strongest version of the topic is not “drugs created civilization.” It is “altered-state ritual was one real tool ancient societies sometimes used to produce authority, healing, transformation, memory, and contact with the sacred.”

Overview
There is strong evidence that some ancient communities used psychoactive plants in ritual or funerary contexts. The best evidence comes from chemical analysis, residue analysis, archaeobotanical remains, iconography, paraphernalia, and later ethnographic continuity. Examples include Bronze Age Menorca hair containing ephedrine, atropine, and scopolamine; cannabis residues in ancient Central Asian funerary contexts; Andean snuff paraphernalia and Chavín ritual evidence; and long-standing debates over San Pedro cactus, vilca, cohoba, and other plants. The weaker claim is that psychedelics explain all religion, all ancient gods, all “forbidden knowledge,” or the origin of civilization itself. Psychoactive plants can be part of ritual systems, but they do not replace politics, ecology, architecture, food production, trade, kinship, warfare, healing, myth, and social hierarchy. The strongest version of the topic is not “drugs created civilization.” It is “altered-state ritual was one real tool ancient societies sometimes used to produce authority, healing, transformation, memory, and contact with the sacred.”

Historical and scholarly context
Psychoactive plants existed inside broader ritual systems
Ritual use was rarely just “taking a drug.” It could include architecture, darkness, sound, smell, fasting, dance, chanting, isolation, pain, costume, masks, elite access, secrecy, initiation, healing, divination, funerary rites, or political authority.
Direct evidence matters
Chemical analysis of human remains or artifacts is much stronger than broad myth comparison. The Bronze Age Menorca hair study is a strong example because it detected specific alkaloids in human hair from a ritual/funerary context.
Meaning is harder than detection
Finding scopolamine, DMT, nicotine, cannabis residue, or cactus remains can show possible use. It does not automatically tell us what users believed, who consumed it, or whether the experience was religious, medical, political, recreational, coercive, or elite-controlled.
Ritual technology is human technology
