Overview
Baalbek
Baalbek is a major archaeological site in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley. In antiquity it was associated with Phoenician religious tradition, known as Heliopolis in the Hellenistic period, and developed into one of the great sanctuaries of the Roman world. Its temple complex includes the Temple of Jupiter, Temple of Bacchus, Temple of Venus, Temple of Mercury remains, and a raised platform incorporating enormous stone blocks. The reason Baalbek dominates alternative history is the size of its stones. The Roman platform includes monoliths weighing over 800 tons, and nearby quarries preserve even larger unfinished stones.
