Overview
Bronze Age Collapse
The Bronze Age Collapse was not one event on one day. It was a regional breakdown of interconnected palace economies, trade networks, diplomatic systems, and military orders across the eastern Mediterranean and Near East. Major centers were destroyed, abandoned, reorganized, or weakened. The Hittite Empire disappeared, Mycenaean palace society collapsed, Ugarit was destroyed, Egypt survived but weakened, and the political map changed. The best evidence supports a multi-cause systems crisis. Drought, crop stress, migration, raiding, internal rebellion, disrupted trade, warfare, earthquakes, and fragile palace economies probably interacted. The Sea Peoples are important, but treating them as the single cause is too simple.

Overview
The Bronze Age Collapse was not one event on one day. It was a regional breakdown of interconnected palace economies, trade networks, diplomatic systems, and military orders across the eastern Mediterranean and Near East. Major centers were destroyed, abandoned, reorganized, or weakened. The Hittite Empire disappeared, Mycenaean palace society collapsed, Ugarit was destroyed, Egypt survived but weakened, and the political map changed. The best evidence supports a multi-cause systems crisis. Drought, crop stress, migration, raiding, internal rebellion, disrupted trade, warfare, earthquakes, and fragile palace economies probably interacted. The Sea Peoples are important, but treating them as the single cause is too simple.
Plain-language explanation
Late Bronze Age states were deeply connected. Palaces controlled production, stored grain, managed diplomatic marriages, exchanged gifts, ordered raw materials, and depended on long-distance trade for copper, tin, luxury goods, and prestige items. This created wealth, but it also created fragility. When multiple stresses hit at the same time, the system could fail in chains. The collapse looked different in different places. The Hittite example is especially useful. Recent tree-ring and isotope work from central Anatolia points to severe dry years around 1198-1196 BC, a plausible tipping point for an already stressed imperial system.
