Overview

The model fits route-timing problems, productive Pacific ecosystems, and early western evidence, but direct late Pleistocene coastal sites remain scarce because many former shorelines are submerged or eroded.

Plain-language explanation

Coastal migration does not replace Beringia. It concerns what happened after ancestral populations reached Beringia: people may have traveled by exposed shore, short water crossings, islands, estuaries, and inland rivers, with different routes used at different times.

Historical and scholarly context

The conventional picture has moved away from a simple Clovis First model. Many researchers now accept that early American settlement involved pre-Clovis populations and probably more than one movement or route. The coastal model is attractive because it can explain how people reached the Americas south of the ice sheets before the inland corridor became a good migration pathway.

The strongest conventional points are practical rather than dramatic: Beringian ancestry connects Native Americans to northeast Asian populations; early sites south of the ice sheets require an early route; Pacific coastal ecosystems could support hunter-gatherers; and sea-level rise has hidden much of the old shoreline evidence. That is enough to make coastal migration plausible. It is not enough to prove a fully maritime migration across the whole Pacific coast with a continuous archaeological trail.

There is also no need to frame coastal migration as either/or. Early people may have used Beringia, coastal routes, island refugia, river corridors, and interior routes at different times. The best website framing is mixed-route migration rather than one clean path.

What the evidence supports

  • The inland ice-free corridor appears too late or too ecologically limited to explain all early evidence south of the ice sheets.
  • Pacific coastlines and kelp forest ecosystems plausibly offered rich, repeatable food sources.
  • Early western North American sites and technologies fit better with a western route than with a simple inland corridor-only model.
  • Sea-level rise explains why direct coastal archaeological evidence is rare.
  • Ancient DNA supports Beringian/northeast Asian ancestry while leaving room for coastal movement out of Beringia.

Limits and disputed claims

  • The theory lacks a continuous excavated chain of late Pleistocene coastal camps because many candidate shorelines are submerged.
  • Some early sites remain contested due to stratigraphy, sample association, or low artifact counts.
  • Monte Verde is currently disputed after the 2026 redating claim and published responses.
  • The theory is often overextended into Atlantis, ancient astronaut, or lost global civilization claims without direct evidence.
