Plain-language explanation
Maya star knowledge worked through cycles. Rather than separating astronomy, religion, and calendar mathematics into modern categories, Maya specialists used celestial cycles as part of ritual and political time. Venus was especially important because its first visibility as morning star could carry dangerous or warlike associations. Eclipse and lunar tables helped track eclipse seasons, even when they did not predict local visibility in a modern sense. The Maya did not need telescopes to build these systems. Repeated observations, trained scribes, inherited tables, mathematical correction schemes, and ritual calendars were enough to produce impressive results.
