Overview
Neanderthal and Denisovan Admixture
Ancient and modern genomes show that modern humans interbred with Neanderthals and Denisovan-related populations, while Neanderthals and Denisovans also had children together. Most living populations outside Africa carry roughly 1–3 percent Neanderthal ancestry, although estimates vary. Denisovan ancestry is distributed more unevenly and is highest in parts of Oceania and Island Southeast Asia. The evidence revises a strict replacement-only version of Out of Africa into a model of predominantly recent African origins with limited archaic admixture.

Ancient and modern genomes show that modern humans interbred with Neanderthals and Denisovan-related populations, while Neanderthals and Denisovans also had children together.
