Historical and scholarly context
Classification and relationship to modern humans
Neanderthals are usually treated as a separate species, Homo neanderthalensis, though some scholars have preferred subspecies language such as Homo sapiens neanderthalensis. The strongest modern framing is that Neanderthals, Denisovans, and Homo sapiens were closely related human lineages with some gene flow between them. They were distinct enough to be recognized in fossils and genomes, but not so reproductively isolated that interbreeding was impossible.
Range and dates
Neanderthal populations lived across a large part of western Eurasia. Their range included western Europe, central Europe, southern Europe, the Levant, and parts of central Asia. Their disappearance as a distinct population happened around 40,000 years ago in much of Europe, but the exact timing varies by site and by the reliability of dates.
Anatomy and adaptation
Neanderthals had robust bodies, large joints, broad torsos, large noses, strong brow ridges, and long low skulls. These traits are often interpreted as adaptations to physically demanding lives and cold or variable Ice Age climates. They were not simply stronger modern humans. They had a distinct anatomy produced by a long separate evolutionary history.
Tools, fire, and subsistence
Neanderthals made stone tools, especially Middle Paleolithic industries often grouped under Mousterian traditions. They used prepared-core methods such as Levallois technology, which required planning and controlled production. They hunted large animals, processed carcasses, used hides, and exploited local resources. Their diet was not only meat. Evidence from different sites supports consumption of plants, fungi, shellfish, and other resources depending on region.
Care, death, and social behavior
Some Neanderthal fossils show healed injuries, degenerative disease, or survival after trauma. This does not automatically prove modern-style compassion, but it does show that some impaired individuals lived long enough to heal. That usually implies social support, food sharing, protection, or at least group tolerance. Burial is debated. Some sites appear to show intentional deposition of bodies, while others are more ambiguous.
Language and communication
Neanderthals almost certainly communicated vocally. They had anatomy and genetic evidence often discussed in relation to speech, including a hyoid bone from Kebara Cave and the presence of FOXP2 variants associated with speech and language in modern humans. That does not prove they had language identical to modern human languages. It supports the more cautious view that they likely had complex vocal communication, while the exact grammar, symbolic range, and social use of language remain unknown.
Symbolic behavior and art
Symbolic behavior is one of the most active public debates around Neanderthals. Evidence includes pigments, ornaments, eagle talons, shells, engravings, and possible cave art. Some claims are strong enough to challenge the old stereotype of Neanderthals as non-symbolic. Other claims are still contested because dating, context, or attribution is uncertain. The safest wording is that Neanderthals show evidence of non-utilitarian and possibly symbolic behavior, but not every dramatic “first artist” headline is settled.
Disappearance
Neanderthals disappeared as a distinct population around the time Homo sapiens populations expanded across Europe and western Eurasia. This does not require one single cause. Climate instability, low population density, fragmented groups, ecological pressure, competition or interaction with Homo sapiens, disease, local replacement, and genetic absorption may all have mattered. The weight of each factor probably varied by region.

- Existence and distinctiveness: Supported by many fossils, anatomical patterns, and ancient DNA.
- Close relationship to Homo sapiens and Denisovans: Strongly supported by genome studies.
- Interbreeding with Homo sapiens: Strongly supported by Neanderthal DNA in many modern human genomes and by early modern human fossils with recent Neanderthal ancestry.
- Toolmaking and hunting: Supported by extensive archaeological evidence across many sites.
- Social care: Supported by healed injuries and survival of impaired individuals, though the emotional meaning cannot be fully reconstructed.
- Complex behavior: Supported by Bruniquel Cave, ornaments, pigments, non-utilitarian objects, and some symbolic-behavior evidence.
- Gradual and regional disappearance: Supported by dating work and the lack of a single disappearance horizon across all regions.
