Zanclean Flood
The Zanclean Flood is the hypothesis that Atlantic water catastrophically refilled the Mediterranean basin after the Messinian Salinity Crisis, when restricted connections to the Atlantic caused extreme salinity changes and large evaporite deposits across the Mediterranean. The most cited version argues that the final refilling happened around 5.33 million years ago through the Gibraltar gateway, with peak discharge far larger than any modern river. The strongest modern version comes from Garcia-Castellanos and colleagues, who argued that erosion at Gibraltar could have produced a feedback loop: more water cut the channel deeper, which let more water in, which caused even more erosion. Their model suggested that most of the final refill may have happened within months to two years. Later work in the eastern Mediterranean and Sicily added possible evidence for megaflood deposits and erosion pathways.

The Zanclean Flood is the hypothesis that Atlantic water catastrophically refilled the Mediterranean basin after the Messinian Salinity Crisis, when restricted connections to the Atlantic caused extreme salinity changes and large evaporite deposits across the Mediterranean. The most cited version argues that the final refilling happened around 5.33 million years ago through the Gibraltar gateway, with peak discharge far larger than any modern river. The strongest modern version comes from Garcia-Castellanos and colleagues, who argued that erosion at Gibraltar could have produced a feedback loop: more water cut the channel deeper, which let more water in, which caused even more erosion. Their model suggested that most of the final refill may have happened within months to two years. Later work in the eastern Mediterranean and Sicily added possible evidence for megaflood deposits and erosion pathways.
