The Storegga Slide was a massive submarine landslide on the Norwegian continental margin. The landslide and tsunami are strongly supported by seafloor mapping, sediment cores, tsunami sand layers, radiocarbon dating, and numerical modeling. The public story often connects Storegga to Doggerland, the now-submerged Mesolithic landscape in the southern North Sea. That connection is real, but it is often overstated. Storegga likely caused dangerous regional inundation in some coastal zones, but Doggerland was already shrinking because of postglacial sea-level rise. Current modeling suggests the tsunami was not necessarily the single cause of Doggerland abandonment or final submergence.

The most cited version argues that the final refilling happened around 5.33 million years ago through the Gibraltar gateway, with peak discharge far larger than any modern river. The strongest modern version comes from Garcia-Castellanos and colleagues, who argued that erosion at Gibraltar could have produced a feedback loop: more water cut the channel deeper, which let more water in, which caused even more erosion. Their model suggested that most of the final refill may have happened within months to two years. Later work in the eastern Mediterranean and Sicily added possible evidence for megaflood deposits and erosion pathways.

The Missoula Floods were enormous late Ice Age floods produced when the Cordilleran Ice Sheet blocked the Clark Fork drainage near northern Idaho and created Glacial Lake Missoula in western Montana. When the ice dam failed, water rushed westward across Idaho, eastern Washington, the Columbia Gorge, and into the Pacific drainage system. These floods carved and modified the Channeled Scabland, deposited huge gravel bars, moved erratic boulders, formed giant current ripples, and left slackwater deposits in temporary flood lakes. The floods are one of the clearest cases where a catastrophic geological interpretation, first strongly advanced by J Harlen Bretz in the 1920s, was resisted, tested, refined, and eventually accepted. Later work by Joseph Pardee, Victor Baker, Richard Waitt, Brian Atwater, John Clague, Jim O'Connor, and others helped turn the floods from a controversial interpretation into a mainstream geologic model.

Burckle Crater Claim

The Burckle Crater Claim was promoted by members of the Holocene Impact Working Group in the 2000s. The proposed crater is described as an undersea feature roughly 29 kilometers across in the southwest Indian Ocean. Proponents argued that large coastal chevron dunes in places such as Madagascar and Australia could point back toward an ocean impact that generated an enormous tsunami. The claim is not accepted as a confirmed impact crater. The evidence is indirect: bathymetric shape, proposed tsunami-direction logic, coastal chevrons, and claimed unusual particles or deposits. Strong confirmation of an impact crater normally requires diagnostic evidence such as shocked minerals, shatter cones, impact melt, geochemical anomaly, breccia, drilling cores, or a clear geophysical structure. Those standards have not been met publicly for Burckle.

The Eltanin impact occurred about 2.51 million years ago in the Gelasian, earliest Pleistocene under the current International Chronostratigraphic Chart; older papers call it late Pliocene because they used the former boundary. Sediment cores preserve noble-metal enrichment, meteoritic material, glassy spherules, and disturbed marine layers. Its importance for this map is mostly comparative. It shows that a sizable asteroid or bolide impact into deep ocean is geologically possible and can leave evidence without an obvious crater. It does not explain the Younger Dryas, post-Ice-Age flood traditions, or human civilization-reset stories because it occurred roughly 2.5 million years ago, far before the relevant human cultural period.
