Ancient astronomy is the study of how past cultures observed, named, measured, predicted, and ritualized the sky. Archaeoastronomy is the study of how sky knowledge appears in material remains such as monuments, temples, tombs, landscape alignments, inscriptions, calendars, and built sightlines. The strongest evidence shows that many ancient cultures carefully tracked the Sun, Moon, planets, stars, solstices, lunar cycles, eclipses, and seasonal patterns. Some sites, such as Chankillo in Peru, Stonehenge in Britain, Newgrange in Ireland, and many Mesoamerican buildings, contain credible astronomical orientations or horizon systems. Overview

Ancient astronomy is the study of how past cultures observed, named, measured, predicted, and ritualized the sky. Archaeoastronomy is the study of how sky knowledge appears in material remains such as monuments, temples, tombs, landscape alignments, inscriptions, calendars, and built sightlines. The strongest evidence shows that many ancient cultures carefully tracked the Sun, Moon, planets, stars, solstices, lunar cycles, eclipses, and seasonal patterns. Some sites, such as Chankillo in Peru, Stonehenge in Britain, Newgrange in Ireland, and many Mesoamerican buildings, contain credible astronomical orientations or horizon systems. Ancient written traditions from Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, India, China, and Mesoamerica also preserve sophisticated celestial records.

Plain-language explanation

Ancient people did not need telescopes to build useful sky knowledge. Repeated naked-eye observation can identify the seasons, solstices, lunar phases, eclipse danger periods, heliacal risings of bright stars, planetary cycles, and long-term calendar patterns. This mattered because the sky was tied to farming, navigation, ritual timing, kingship, myth, weather expectation, and social order. Archaeoastronomy asks a more specific question: how did people build sky knowledge into places and objects? A temple axis may face sunrise on a feast day. A passage tomb may catch winter solstice light. A row of towers may mark solar movement across the horizon. A codex may track Venus or eclipse periods. A stone circle may frame solstitial directions.

What is strongly supported

Many ancient cultures used the sky to organize time. Solstices, equinoxes, lunar months, star risings, and planetary cycles had practical and symbolic value. Agricultural calendars, ritual calendars, royal ceremonies, navigation systems, and architectural orientations often depended on celestial observation.

Some sites are unusually strong. Chankillo in Peru is one of the clearest examples because the Thirteen Towers form a horizon calendar visible from observation points, spanning the annual path of sunrise and sunset. UNESCO describes it as a third-century BCE solar timekeeping landscape with ritual and administrative components.

Stonehenge has a broadly accepted solstitial axis, especially midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset alignment. Newgrange is strongly associated with winter solstice sunrise illumination. Maya astronomy is supported by surviving codices and inscriptions that record Venus, eclipse, lunar, and calendar cycles. Babylonian astronomy is supported by systematic star lists, omen texts, and mathematical astronomy.

What remains debated

Many proposed alignments are less secure. Some may reflect intentional design; others may be coincidental, later reinterpretation, or modern pattern seeking. The meaning of an alignment is not always knowable even when the direction is real. For example, a solar alignment might mark agricultural timing, ritual rebirth, royal power, ancestor cult, cosmology, or a combination of these.

The biggest disputed zone is precession. Hipparchus is the earliest widely credited Greek discoverer of the precession of the equinoxes. Some researchers argue that earlier cultures noticed precessional effects indirectly through long-term star shifts. That is possible in some cases, but definitive evidence remains limited.

The strongest evidence for ancient astronomy comes from cases where multiple lines converge: measurable alignments, repeated architectural patterns, archaeological context, textual records, calendrical use, and cultural meaning.
