Plain-language explanation

North Atlantic climate changed abruptly around 12,900 years ago. Proponents argue for one or more impacts or airbursts. Major reviews reject the broad package because the proposed markers are inconsistent, often non-unique, and lack a demonstrated synchronous causal chain.

Historical and scholarly context

The Younger Dryas climate event is not disputed. The cause remains a serious paleoclimate question, but mainstream explanations usually focus on ice-sheet retreat, freshwater routing, ocean circulation changes, atmospheric circulation, meltwater pulses, and regional feedbacks. These mechanisms do not require a cosmic impact.

Late Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions were also real, but they were not a single clean event. They occurred over different timings in different regions and likely involved climate change, human hunting pressure, habitat shifts, ecological stress, and regional differences. A single impact event does not explain this complexity well.

Clovis culture changed near the Younger Dryas onset, but that does not equal a population wipeout. Archaeological transitions can reflect changing tools, mobility, prey, environments, and regional adaptations. The claim that an impact destroyed Clovis or sharply reduced Paleoindian populations remains weak.

What the evidence supports

  • The Younger Dryas climate reversal was abrupt and real, so a triggering mechanism is a legitimate question.
  • Some geochemical anomalies and proposed markers have been reported near Younger Dryas boundary contexts.
